A Look Back at the 'Ground Hog Day Blizzard' of 2011

There may be a lack of snow this year, but one year ago a history-making storm hit the area Jan. 31 through Feb. 2, 2011, leaving behind15 to 18 inches.

It was a three-day snow event that the National Weather Service predicted would have a "paralyzing" impact on many parts of Wisconsin — a storm that was coming to an end one year ago this date.

Between 15 and 18 inches of snow fell over three days — Jan. 31 through Feb. 2 — in the Port Washington and Saukville area, according to the National Weather Service.

When it was all said and done, Wisconsin Emergency Management issued a civil emergency for the area. Two major interstates, I-43 and I-94, were shut down from Milwaukee to the Illinois border because of the drifting snow. Numerous city meetings, activities and school were closed in Port and Saukville.

The blizzard had several nicknames including "The Groundhogs Day Blizzard of 2011", "The 2011 Super Bowl Blizzard" or "Snowmageddon 2011."
