Cooler Weather Means Cold Season
A few friendly reminders about keeping healthy during the upcoming cold and flu season.

Wow, I feel so much better now!
I am the type of mom that scrubs down the grocery carts, carries gallons of hand sanitizer everywhere and will find any excuse to exit play group if I spot a runny nose.
While my family thinks it is hilarious to tease me about how careful I am about germs, I don’t think getting sick is a laughing matter. When one person in the family gets sick, it eventually spreads through the house like wildfire.
As cold and flu season quickly approaches, here are some friendly reminders and tips:
- If your child has been sick (this can include, but is not limited to, fever, diarrhea, runny nose with gelatinous consistency) please, please, please keep them home. I don’t care how much you need to get out of the house and socialize. You and your spawn will infect us all, mmmmk? This includes trips to the store, library and other places where humans frequent.
- Hand Sanitizer is your friend. Gel, spray, wipes or whatever you method of choice is — I fully support it. I keep a small bottle in my diaper bag and another in the car so I can apply a squirt as soon as we get into the car. I am also not ashamed to give "public" toys (think trains at the bookstore) a quick wipe down either.
- To piggyback on hand sanitizer — wash your hands and your children’s hands. As soon as we get in the house, whether it is from school, park or grocery store, we remove our shoes and wash our hands. That is just how it goes. Please remember to have kids wash their hands before eating as well, even if you are in a public place. Play games, sing songs, do what you have to do to get them to scrub for 30 seconds.
- Cover that mouth! When kids get a little older, it is easier to teach them about how to cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze. Sneezing or coughing into your elbow contains the germs in a "safer" place compared to sneezing into your hands.
- Rest up! Rest is so important in fighting a virus. I give you my blessing to snuggle up with your little ones, watch a movie and drink hot chocolate. Use the sickies as an excuse to spend some time with the kids and not worry about the mountain of laundry or pile of bills, those can wait.
Sharing is important and all kids should do it — but sharing germs is not cool. This fall and winter, be smart about sickness. Let's all make an effort to keep each other healthy.
