Duman Drops Out of Mayor Race, but Others Join

Port residents John Sigwart and Tom Mlada have joined candidate list to be the new leader of the city.

Two more candidates have entered the race to become the next Port Washington mayor, but the pool only grows by one as former announces he will drop off the list.

Duman, who recognizes himself as a liberal Democrat, said he decided not to run for mayor because of the fact that the position is meant to be nonpartisan.

"I’m a very proud Democrat, and it would be difficult for me in the position of mayor (to not speak about important issues)," Duman said, adding that he will again run for 60th Assembly District spot in fall 2012 and will use the coming months to focus on that campaign.

The new candidates include Tom Mlada, who sits on the city's Plan Commission, and John Sigwart, but lost to incumbent Dan Becker in spring. They join and .

"I am truly excited about being a part of the mayoral race over these next four months," Mlada said. "I feel privileged to be among those being considered to help lead our great city forward. I plead guilty to being a very positive, passionate guy — and I'm ready to bring that and my energy and openness to ideas to the race."

Sigwart did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment, but Port Washington Deputy Clerk Susan Westerbecke said he has withdrawn the necessary paperwork from the city. Mlada is still collecting signatures needed to appear on the ballot.

The position is up for election in spring. After nine years in office, current Mayor Scott Huebner , which would also allow him to focus more on his family. The mayor earns $7,500 and serves three-year terms.

Nomination forms with signatures are due by Tuesday. If more than three people file the appropriate paperwork, a primary election would be held Feb. 21.

The top two vote-getters in the primary will advance to the April 3 general election, for the Port Washington Common Council, Saukville Village Board and the Port Washington-Saukville School Board.
