PD: Gun Sparks Apartment Controversy

A Port Washington resident takes issue with a neighbor who has a gun — despite the weapon being stored in a safety deposit box at the bank.

A Port Washington man who will soon face eviction proceedings has been causing quite the ruckus at his apartment because of a neighbor who owns a gun — even though the woman said she does not store it at her residence.

Police responded to the residence at 7:13 p.m. March 4 after a dispute was taking place between a man and a woman in the apartment complex' laundry room, according to the police report. The woman was doing her laundry when the man entered, eventually beginning to argue with her about owning a gun; the woman said she felt "intimidated" and yelled back in hopes he would back down.

This is the second day in a row that police had made contact with this man about the issue, the report said. On this day, he did appear "quite intoxicated." Police advised the man not to contact the woman again, or it would result in either a citation or an arrest.

Police followed up the next day, and the woman said she had not been at her apartment and therefore had not seen the man, the report said. The landlords of the property told police they are aware of problems with this tenant and were in the process of evicting him.

In this situation she should have the gun on her person, not locked up.

+1 This guy seems to be escalating his violence. I wouldn't wait for the third strike, for the police to maybe give him a ticket. He followed her into the laundry room, which means she probably felt trapped (as well as intimidated). He's already been told by police to knock it off. He's being evicted, so has little to lose.

What good is a gun in a safety deposit box? Guns will benefit you the most when they are loaded and easily accesible. Sounds like this guy is some drunk liberal whack job... kinda like our politicians.

Which, PWCG or the guy being evicted? I wonder if the CG in PWCG might suggest that PW thinks himself a government official, DHS-military-USGC?

A gun with a trigger-lock is a poor boat anchor, petty officer.

This incident happened at a senior housing complex in Port. The man is of very slight frame and probably weighs far less than the woman in this incident.

And that excuses his disorderly conduct & victim intimidation how, exactly?

Actually, my understanding is that he is a normal sized middle aged man. Not everyone there is a senior. What makes you think hes frail?

I also see very few businesses posted no guns. The 2 banks I use are not posted, and the one that I have a safe deposit box at allows unloaded firearms to be stored in it. Is it possible this woman inherited the gun and has no interest in carrying it, or that it's an antique, and that is why she has it locked in a safety deposit box?

I think the beef, is more a question. This happened in a senior living complex here in Port. Locked lobby -- controlled entry. Why really, would an elderly woman need to carry a gun on her person? Why would a woman need to threaten a man with the very suggestion she had a gun? Why didn't she simply pick up her phone and call 911 for help? In this case, residents called for the cops to stop the argument...cops arrived in less than three minutes.

Where does it say that the woman threatened the man?
The article says that twice now the man has threatened the woman, because he doesn't like some of her property. (How he came to know about it, we're not told.)

She doesn't carry her self-defense tool because she (apparently unreasonably) thinks she's safe there. With the guy threatening her, cornering her in the laundry room, intimidating her, etc., I think it's perfectly reasonable for her to have a self-defense tool on her person. I can't imagine having to call the police two days in a row, and especially for the same threatening person.

Unless there was a phone to call 911 in the laundry room, and he let her get to it & call for help, your suggestion that she "simply pick up the phone and call 911" is ludicrous. Calling 911 only helps if the criminal lets you get to the phone.

This really isn't a story about guns. This is more about a problem tenant with serious issues...

I agree that the headline is misleading (not much of a surprise).
It's not the gun causing the problem (since the gun can't do anything... it's an object), it's the drunken disorderly threatening man who seems to think that his opinion matters more than anyone else's.
