Wisconsin Teachers Revolting Against the Demands of Their Union Bosses
Some rank-and-file members upset with WEAC endorsing a unproven candidate for statewide office who has lost twice already.
As Wisconsin taxpayers are faced with an expensive recall election for governor, rank-and-file members of the state’s largest teachers union are fuming mad over the endorsement of a candidate that was hand-picked by their leadership.
Kathleen Falk, the former Dane County executive, was endorsed by Wisconsin Education Association Council bosses on Wednesday, with one condition: Uphold a promise to veto the budget reforms instituted by Gov. Scott Walker.
Hours after the endorsement, a petition on change.org was created to demand that the union rescind its endorsement of the former chief executive of the second largest county government in Wisconsin. Rank-and-file members were upset with WEAC endorsing a unproven candidate for statewide office that lost two times.
Any keen observer of Wisconsin politics knows of Falk’s failed runs for statewide office. In 2002, she finished dead last in a three-way Democratic primary for governor to then-Governor Jim Doyle and former Congressman Tom Barrett. Four years later, Falk lost a bid to be Wisconsin’s attorney general during a wave election for Democrats.
Falk was forever infamous during the 2006 attorney general’s race for blatantly lying about J.B. Van Hollen’s role in a child sex predator case and accusing him of releasing him on bail despite he was not district attorney at the time of release.
A handful of Democratic sheriffs and district attorneys endorsed Van Hollen because they knew that Falk could not be trusted to be Wisconsin’s top law enforcement official.
WEAC’s rank-and-file members have every right to be upset about their leadership endorsing a unproven candidate. They are questioning if a candidate who met in secret with the union bosses is worthy of their endorsement. Could this backlash translate into support for State Senator Kathleen Vinehout, who announced her intent to run on Wednesday? Only time will tell as Wisconsin’s Democrats will face a very divisive primary that will pit their grassroots versus the big labor bosses that are telling them who they should vote for.
The only person that will benefit from the union’s divisiveness is Walker. As Walker will not have to face a primary election, he will enjoy a fund-raising and organizational advantage that the liberals will have a hard time replicating. The unions may face their worst nightmare during the Democratic primary if they do not listen to their front-line members that make up the Democratic Party.

Great pick by the bosses! Look at politifact - she raised taxes by millions of dollars during tough times. Then, she also blatantly spoke lies about JB Van Hollen when she was running against him. That's the type of candidate we want to go against Walker....one that doesn't have a snowball's chance! Then again, anyone they put up will be soundly defeated.

Falks pick in secret by teacher union leadership which was based on her agreement to void act 10 just goes to prove that the whole Walker recall effort is based on restoring the gravy train for union leaders. Still can't understand why nobody has started a class action lawsuit against he WEA for their abusive fraudulent action in forcing local education boards to accept the WEA bloated cost health insurance for the teachers for a long period of time.

Matt C. kids don't pay for WEAC's own insurance, their parents do. All that matters is that she is willing to be a union puppet and will raise taxes to pay for teachers benefits through the union. Her record speaks for itself. Personally I am pleased with this endorsement. She give Gov Walker a great chance to win the recall. All the teachers can do is say Baah, as the sheep follow the Union leadership. Unions never listen to their rank and file. They generally follow the money or power like all unions do. Members are their to provide them with money and voting blocks so they can push business or tax payers around. Back in the day it served a purpose to protect workers from bad conditions and lousey pay but with todays world economies and competition they are useless drags on the tax payers and industry.

Unions exist to protect teachers from an often unreasonable public that is never satisfied. The average citizen, for the most part, is only interested in the schools as long as their child is in school. Schools, to their detriment, rarely say no to the public's demands. School board meetings provide a forum for anyone with an axe to grind to vent. Consequently, the public dumps more and more on the school to do, that the family used to do, until the schools can no longer deliver the quality citizens feel they are entitled to. This is all done on the cheap, and with much disrespect toward the very teachers they are counting on to deliver what they want. Parents defend their children's poor behavior rather than back the teachers. When you are expected to be something for everyone, you end up being nothing for anyone. If anyone needs a union, it is the teachers that work in the cauldron we call the public schools.

Good God, that's the biggest pantload I've ever read! Let me guess, you're one of those who believes teachers are 'raising our kids' right? Maybe if teachers concentrated on crazy stuff, like TEACHING, and left the child rearing to the grownups, things might be a little better? I grew up in 30+ student classrooms with NO outside teacher's aids, and everyone seemed to do just fine. Of course we didn't have endless debates over the lie of global warming, we weren't subjected to sexual orientation diversity training, and we didn't learn to properly apply a condom to anything... but we could read, do math, had a good understanding of history, civics, the arts...

@ Sheeple...good one!!! Don't forget to add "balance a budget/checkbook"...and "work to payoff your debts" (instead filing bankruptcy and keeping everything you own only to start the cycle of debt all over again instead of changing said spending habits)...However, I do agree with Dave on the disrespecting the teachers aspect of the comment...That shouldn't be allowed at any level..."My child would NEVER do anything like that!!!" (yea right) The reason why they defend their kids is because their kids are a direct reflection of the parents (not in all cases) most of the time, so in reality, they HAVE to defend their kids to defend their parenting...so put said parents in detention with their kids...

I can't find anyone who thinks WEAC's endorsement of Falk was a good idea. This is like Trump endorsing Rommney. This is such an affirmation of all conservative criticism of WEAC and unions in general. I can't imagine WEAC doing anything more harmful to itself, especially with regard to voluntary association. As a clergy person who has oft witnesses his national leadership--even with representatives voting--act in ways that were insensitive to the broader constituency, I can only imagine the number of educators who are saying, "OK, see ya!"

Greg...Union teachers "ripping off" the taxpayers? Where are you going to find such an inexpensive babysitting service for your kids? Rejoice that your schools are as good as they are. Teachers don't set the curriculum that you feel is missing so much practical stuff, your school board does, with state mandates. Teachers only teach what they are told to teach. If the people could get away with it, they'd pay the teachers nothing. Teachers wouldn't be allowed to marry, and they'd have to do all janitorial work at the sufferance of the community. Teachers didn't take a vow of poverty. Even though they are described as "dedicated", it is not the priesthood. If people's attitudes and expectations don't get toned down, you will never be able to get people to become teachers. You CAN home school, but that has a lot of inconveniences for parents. It would be great if parents did their jobs reliably with their kids so they were school-ready. You read the papers; parents are not doing their part. Kids are rude and unprepared, and the parents defend their kids instead of backing the teacher and having higher expectations of their child's behavior. You ought to spend some time in a high school or middle school. In many ways, kids have changed a lot since you were in school. Quality teaching takes time and requires concentration. Don't fill the teacher's day with whatever you don't want to deal with. As long as this is true, unions will be needed.

I said "why did the teachers union have to flat out rip off the tax payers?". But it is run by the teachers, so it is what it is.
All of your other crying has nothing to do with the issues at hand and yet I feel teachers WILL be better off with local control. Not everyone is beating up the teachers, I think the Walker reforms even opened up doors for GOOD teachers. But teachers stuck in the mud, like you, will always need union protection.
Dave Koven

Greg...Even in unions teachers don't get to announce what salary they want and the community has to give it. Arbitrators make the decisions. It's not me that you hear crying. You're hearing the communities who want to do everything on the cheap and expect miracles in return. You're right, not everyone is beating on the teachers, but there are enough that you won't find anyone who will want to teach in your schools. Keep this up, and only the dregs will be attracted. You'll look back on today like it was a Golden Age. Walker has opened no doors for anyone. The damage he has done will last for a long time, with the politicians who follow him trying not to be blamed for it. P.S. Never say a person is "crying" when they are reporting what is happening. I'd hate to see you as a military forward observer reporting on the reality he sees. Would your Colonel tell you you were crying if you said the road ahead looked really bad and the enemy was everywhere? You're not one of those "right wingers" I hear so much about, are you?
