All Hands on Deck: Cardboard Boat Race Sign-up Deadline Extended

Port Washington will see its first annual Cardboard Boat Regatta during the Maritime Heritage Festival in August.

I'm still afraid my boat is going to sink — but at least now I know I won't be the only one in the water after a meeting Saturday of the participants in the first annual Cardboard Boat Regatta.

Patch is building a boat as part of the race during the Port Washington Maritime Heritage Festival on August 20, and there's still room for more boats to sign up — applications will be accepted until Saturday.

For those of you who don't know what a Cardboard Boat Regatta is, it involves sailing boats made completely of cardboard — straight up, regular corrugated cardboard, not this wax-coated water-proof stuff — and floating for, according to Port's rules, 175 yards. Other supplies you can use include glue, duct tape (but only for the seams) and latex-based paint.

It costs $15 for a single person and $30 for a team of 2 or more. Registration forms and more detailed information on the rules for building are available on the festival's site.
