Bags 4 Buczek: Tournament Event Honors Tyler's Life

About sixty teams have already signed up for the event honoring the 15-year-old who passed away last year.

About sixty teams are already signed up for a day-long bags tournament that will honor Tyler Buczek just more than a year after the 15-year-old passed away.

Bags 4 Buczek will be held on Sept. 21 at Veteran's Memorial Park, 430 Lake St., Port Washington. The event remembers Buczek, who died while swimming in Lake Michigan over Labor Day weekend in 2012.

Resident Gary Knaub worked with members of The Port Gridiron Club to organize the event. Knaub had been a coach to Buczek and through that was also friends of the family.

"When Tyler passed away, I spent a lot of time thinking about what can we do to memorialize him and celebrate his life — but I wanted to make sure it was a grand event, I didn't want it to be a flop, and have Tyler's name attached," Knaub said.

After joining Port Gridiron, an organization that supports football in the Port Washington and Saukville area, Knaub found the support that was needed to make the idea a reality.

High school teams will throw first, with their tournament kicking off at 10 a.m.; adult teams play at 2:30 p.m. Registration is available until the day of the tournament, however teams who register before Saturday will pay $20; after that, the cost goes to $30.

Teams can register online here.
