Eighth-grader Winner of Book Publishing Contest, School Award

A column celebrating area kids' achievements showcases Hana Castillo this week.

Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree.

Each week, Port Washington-Saukville Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

We want to hear about these amazing children and teens, and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.  Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Editor Lyssa Beyer.

This week's Whiz Kid is Hana Castillo.

Names:  Hana Castillo
Grade: 8th grade
Accomplishment: Hana Castillo was one of the recipients of the Saint Cecilia Award at Port Catholic school. This award is given at the end of the second quarter to two middle school students.  Our music teacher, Mrs. Mary Jo Holzer, picks one student for his/her vocal abilities — and chose Hana. Hana was also the winner of a book contest hosted by Riveredge Nature Center in November.
Key to Awesomeness: "My inspiration for my book started with the crisis that was going on in the south. At the time, the oil spill was all over the news. I first started with the idea of tree restoration; then, I changed my mind to write about pollution of main water sources, ending up with the 'Dr. Suess' theme of rhyming my words. The project was to go with child-themed storybook — I figured it would be more fun to read. As I composed the book, I went to rhyming websites to help me rhyme. I had to look in encyclopedias and figure out my message, eventually finishing my book 'The Ocean Blue.'"
