Fishing Event for Veterans Calls for Volunteers

The 39th annual Disabled Veterans Fishing Outing organizers hope for the 'amazing' event to thank veterans for what they've done. Organizers are still seeking volunteers for the June 20 event.

Volunteers are still being sought for the 39th annual Disabled Veterans Fishing Outing on June 20 at the for an event one organizer described as an "amazing" opportunity to honor vets with a memorable day of fishing on the lake.

Around 100 veterans will take part in the day of fishing, according to organizing committee chair Mary Schuknecht, and they are still seeking volunteers to offer their boats, clean up after the event or help prepare the day's catch.

"It just gives the vets an opportunity to get out of the hospital and get some fresh air," Schuknecht said. "And we can say 'thank you' for everything they've done."

The vets will arrive at the marina around 8 a.m. June 20, when the fishing will begin. The event should finish around 2 p.m. Schuknecht said they can always use more help for the event, especially if some boats drop out that morning.

"The more people we have helping, the easier the work is," Schuknecht said. "And it's great to see their smiles. This is their day, and one vet's smile is worth the whole day to me."

The day will also feature door prizes and a prize for the biggest fish caught in each category.

Schuknecht said all boat sizes are welcome, not just charters or large fishing boats. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact her at 262-284-9144.
