New Mayor Takes Lead of City Among 2012 Highlights

A recap of the top 10 stories of 2012 recognizes Mayor Tom Mlada's election to lead the city in April.

Editor's note: Looking back on 2012, there were a lot of ups and downs experienced by the Port Washington and Saukville community.

While the good times are often easier to remember, it's important to also take note of the tragic events that mold the community and bring its members together — and to never let go of the memories of those we have lost, who meant so much.

The top 10 stories were chosen based on qualifications such as the number of readers on an article and the amount of Facebook "likes" or "recommendations" it had, as well as community impact — among other considerations.

The No. 7 story recognizes Mayor Tom Mlada's winning of the election to become the next leader of Port Washington.

Mlada defeated Jim Vollmar 1,555-1,370 to win a term as mayor of Port Washington. He'll replace outgoing mayor Scott Huebner.

"I'm beyond excited and obviously very humbled and honored; I’m very energized," Mlada said after learning of his victory. "My commitment is to Port Washington … to its residents, to business leaders, to property owners, to council at the city staff — and that’s everybody, whether you voted for me or not."
