Observe Memorial Day in Port Washington and Saukville

Monday, May 27 is the time to honor our patriots and welcome the summer.

Memorial Day is a time to commemorate those who have fallen in service to the United States.

The official celebration of these heroes began in the 1860s after the Civil War, when wreaths were laid on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The practice was fully recognized throughout the existing states by 1890.

So, what is the best way to honor the holiday?

In Port Washington, the city will pay tribute to those who have given so much to the country with a parade and program on Monday.

The parade, sponsored by the Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Post 82, will start at 10:30 a.m. and run through downtown beginning at Wisconsin Street and Grand Avenue, east on Grand Avenue, north on Franklin Street and then follow Pier and Lake streets to Veterans Memorial Park, according to the Ozaukee Press.

A program will follow at the park with local high school bands playing patriotic music, a wreath-laying ceremony and rifle salute, the Press writes.

For those who prefer something traditional to honor the fallen, place wreaths or flowers at war memorials or grave sites. Port Washington and Saukville residents can purchase wreaths or flowers at Brown's Floral & Gifts or Pick 'n Save to name a couple.

You can also host a barbecue or partake in a little Memorial Day shopping and take advantage of holiday sales. You can even enjoy a local festival.

The sixth annual Port Washington Community Street Festival is slated for noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday on Franklin Street in downtown Port Washington.

Festivities range from live music from local bands to laser tag to an appearance by Cinderella, Belle and Snow White, according to the Ozaukee Press.

Swimming is a viable option as well, with local options like the Pirates Hollow Community Water Park. Dig out your swim gear and a good book and head over for a dip. Pack plenty of snacks and have a picnic.

And remember, should you decide to hang a flag on Memorial Day, it should never touch the ground and it should be flown at half-mast until noon.
