Patch Picks: Five Great Books to Read

It's National Read Across America week in celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

It's the National Education Association's Read Across America week, coinciding with the birthday of Theodore Geisel, known best as Dr. Seuss. Here are five great reading options you can search for at the W.J. Niederkorn Library in Port Washington and the Oscar Grady Library in Saukville:

1. "The Giving Tree," Shel Silverstein. The unique children's author and illustrator provides a metaphor for the love and sacrifice of parenthood in the story of a tree and its favorite young boy.

2. "Green Eggs and Ham," Dr. Seuss. The simple classic. Just 50 different words, which have empowered countless children with the idea that yes, they can read.

3. "Moon over Manifest" by Clare Vanderpool won the 2011 Newberry Medal. A 12-year-old girl, daughter of a drifter, is sent to stay with her father's friend in Kansas, where she hopes to learn about her father's past.

4. "The Book Thief," by Markus Zusak. Set in Nazi Germany, the author describes a young girl's relationship with her foster parents, the other residents of their neighborhood and a Jewish fistfighter who hides in her home during the escalation of World War II.

5. "Wisconsin Road Guide to Gangster Hot Spots," by Chad Lewis. The author, born and raised in Eau Claire, WI, writes about the long and colorful history connecting the land and the people intimately to the deviant gangster lifestyle. Lewis lays out the real story behind the gangster legends, but also provides a road map to locations where the gangsters hung out. Plenty of photographs and maps of the locations are provided in the book.
