Plots Available in Community Garden to Open this Spring

Volunteers will also be needed to help with the construction of Hales Trail Community Garden.

A community garden set to open in Port Washington officially has a name: Hales Trail Community Garden, named for the street that crosses the Interurban Trail just north of the garden.

The garden has room for 60 plots that are 15 feet by 15 feet, but the group will only create as many as are signed up for. The annual fee per plot is set at $25 for residents, and $30 for nonresidents.

People interested in a plot can conatct organizer Derek Strohl by e-mailing ourgardeninport@gmail.com.

Here's more updates on the garden as written in a press release from Strohl:

  • The project has been adopted by Ozaukee Master Gardeners, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Ozaukee Master Gardeners coordinates the Washington County Community Garden in West Bend.Β  Ozaukee Master Gardeners brings to the project a high level of expertise in gardening and coordinating community projects.
  • The Hales Trail Community Garden is raising funds for the construction of a fence by selling seeds from Seed Savers Exchange.Β  People can purchase garden seeds through the Community Garden, who will get to keep 40 percent of the proceeds.Β  This offer is valid through the month of February.
  • Azariah Pargulski, a Boy Scout in Troop 875, has volunteered to coordinate the construction of the fence around the garden for his Eagle project. We are very excited to have Pargulski on our team.
  • We will break ground and build the fence this spring, as soon as the ground is dry enough to work. We will need many hands to push wheelbarrows, dig holes and strip sod.
  • Interested volunteers, donors, seed buyers and others can find more information at the Hales Trail Community Garden page on Facebook or by sending their questions to ourgardeninport@gmail.com.
