Port Radio Station Sees Delay Due to Government Shutdown

A group of residents was hoping to launch a community radio station, but the government shutdown means they can't submit their application.

Members of Port Washington Community Broadcasting, Inc., hoped Tuesday would be a big day for them, but could never have guessed the one thing that would stand in their way: the government shutdown.

PWCBI hopes to launch a radio station after being chosen through an application process with the Federal Communications Commission to grant the group a Low Power FM broadcast station license — an application process that was slated to start on Oct. 15.

From the group's Facebook page:

"Tonight at midnight was to be a momentous occasion for Port Washington. Tomorrow, October 15 was to be the opening of the LPFM filing window that would allow Port Washington Community Broadcasting to apply for a license to establish broadcast services. However, due to the government shutdown, all employees of the FCC have been sent home, and all functions of the FCC website have been disabled, including the ability to file. Since no one is available to answer the phone or even field questions, the status of the filing window is unknown. We can only assume that once the government is operational and the online filing systems enabled once again, the date will be extended and/or moved."
