Registration for Classes at Humane Society in Saukville Already Open

The new shelter will offer educational opportunities for people and pets; grand opening is Saturday.

With the opening of the new shelter quickly approaching, the Ozaukee Humane Society is busy prepping the Saukville location for its day-to-day operations.

Tuesday night, a arrived at the shelter, and the Humane Society is also already accepting registration for new educational programs at the Saukville campus, including programs for people and for pets.

The Ozaukee Humane Society has been partnering with local schools for years, Laura Nowlin, the organization’s education manager said, adding that there are three primary educational programs.

The first is tailored for younger students, usually kindergarten to second grade, and teaches children how to interact with animals. While visiting the Humane Society, the kids learn how to take care of pets and safe ways to meet new animals.

“It teaches them responsibility and safety,” Nowlin said.

The shelter will also continue to offer it’s Wisconsin Humane Society 101 program, which offers students from third grade to high school a chance to tour the facility and learn about the journey animals take from the time they are brought to the shelter until they are adopted.

The final program is targeted toward high school students, according to Nowlin.  It informs students about animal welfare careers and how to get involved.

Dog owners can also sign their animals up for dog training, including a "Basic Manners Class," "Puppy ABCs (Appropriate Behavior Class)," therapy classes and more.

Some of the classes have a fee. Visit www.ozaukeehumane.org to register and learn more. People intersted in specific information about the education programs can contact Andrea Goschey at agoschey@ozaukeehumane.org for information.

The shelter is set to open on Saturday, and a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m.
