Weeklong Event Focuses on Local Kids

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Port Washington is hosting its Week of the Young Child event, including seminars about bee keeping, being healthy, water safety and more. The events are all free.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Port Washington is hosting its annual weeklong event focused on area youth starting Monday.

This is the eleventh year the group is hosting the "Week of the Young Child," which features "a new theme and set of activities" each night, according to the event pamphlet. The activities are meant to "encourage the development of children within their families and to have fun." Most acitivities are for children ages 3 to 9.

Here's a rundown of the week's events:

  • Bee Smart — 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday at Dunwiddie Elementary: Learn about the importance of bees and meet a beekeeper, plus plant a bee-attracting flower. Honey treats involved. 
  • Be a Health Nut — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lincoln Elementary: Participate in an obstacle course and enjoy a smoothie bar.
  • Flip, Float and Follow — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Thomas Jefferson Middle School: The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project will teach a method to help people survive being trapped in currents known as "Flip, Float and Follow." *This event open to all ages.
  • What lives in a pond? — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Saukville Elementary: Design frogs and turtles and explore the lives of these creatures in the wild.
  • Be Fire Smart — 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Port Washington Fire Station: Meet a firefighter and enjoy hands-on learning, including tours and more.
