Local Ballerinas Perform 'Nutcracker' in Port

Lake Shore Dance is putting on the Nutcracker this weekend at Port Washington High School as a benefit for the Food Pantry for the fourteenth year in a row.

Young ballerinas with Lake Shore Dance will perform the "Nutcracker" this weekend in the auditorium.

Gwendolyn Agee, director of the Port Washington Lake Shore Dance studio, said people come to their version of the play because it is affordable, local and family-friendly β€” running an hour-and-a-half with narration by character Herr Drosselmeyer.

"It's a wonderful Christmas ballet, and most people know the story β€” but we have it narrated," Agee said, "which helps, especially the younger kids, follow the story line."

In the 14 years the ballet has run, it has always benefitted the Port Washington Food Pantry, inside . Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for kids and seniors; receive a $1 discount with a nonperishable food donation.

With dancers as young as 4, almost all of the performers take classes at the Lake Shore Dance school in Port Washington. Agee said most of the dancers are from Port and Sauville, through the school draws from communities as far north as Cedar Grove.

The first performance, at 12:45 p.m. Friday, is open to community or school groups and senior centers and has limited space left. Call ahead to reserve space at 262-284-0910.

The Saturday performance at 5:30 p.m. is open to the public. Half the auditorium sold out in the presale, so Agee recommends arriving early to get a seat.

If you can't make either of the Port performances, there will also be two in Cedarburg at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center. The times for these shows are 5:30 p.m. Sunday and 9:30 a.m. Monday. The cast for those performances will draw more from Lake Shore Dance's Cedarburg studio.
