Resident Launches Walking School Bus for Students

The supervised walks to school offer a safety net for the kids.

A Port Washington resident is organizing chaperoned walks to school for students, an effort known as a "walking school bus."

Resident Derek Strohl has been working to coordinate the four routes, according to an Ozaukee Press article. Chaperones will pick up students as they walk a route to three district schools: Dunwiddie and Lincoln elementary schools as well as Thomas Jefferson Middle School.

Only one route will be ready when school starts on Tuesday, the article said, and chaperones will undergo a background check by the Port Washington-Saukville School District.

The walking school bus isn't a new idea: an online guide helps people interested in starting one up, and communities in other states have added the service as well.
