Bites Nearby: For the Sweetest Place in Town, Swing by Sweetheart Cakes

Offering treats like Grandma used to make, Sweetheart Cakes is the place in Port for pastries, doughnuts and other sweets.

Looking for the perfect bite around town?  Each week, Port Washington-Saukville Patch finds a great, local place to dine.  Here’s what’s worth checking out this week:

— Offering a large selection of cookies, pastries, and doughnuts, it is safe to say that there’s nowhere sweeter around than Sweetheart Cakes in Port Washington.

The centrally located bakery is the perfect place to stop to pick up a dozen doughnuts on a Sunday morning, but it also serves as a casual atmosphere where customers can take a seat, grab a coffee and a Danish, and catch up.

With a welcoming environment, owner Susan Runkel wants to cater to her customers with her confections.  “It’s not just cookie cutter here,” she said.

With that in mind, Runkel and her team of bakers stir up dozens of delicious options, from croissants to crullers to cupcakes.  With so many sweet treats, it’s difficult to say what’s the best choice at Sweetheart Cakes, but one can never go wrong sharing a jimmy square covered in fluffy frosting or ordering a light-as-air doughnut with chocolate glaze.

Runkel said what makes Sweetheart Cakes different from big bakeries and grocery stores is that she makes everything fresh.  “It’s like Grandma used to make,” she said.
