Business as Usual: A Recap of the Top Stories in 2012

The top business stories in 2012 include the opening of Duluth Trading Company, changes in the roll-your-own cigarette industry, a couple local businesses that closed and some planned renovations in Port's downtown.

Editor's note: The Port Washington and Saukville area saw plenty of business developments — from new businesses announced to others closing as well as major renovations — throughout 2012.

  • January: New ownership at Java Dock Cafe stirred a few things up at the local coffee shop.
  • February: Duluth Trading announced its decision to join Port's downtown, with plans to open in fall.
  • March: The hunt for the best margarita in town drew a lot of attention. Find out who won in Port Washington and the Milwaukee area.
  • April: A Harris Bank location in Port Washington closed.
  • May: We Energies again tagged a group of baby falcons in its efforts to help restore the dwindling population of the bird.
  • June:  Morgan Stanley executive and Port native Daniel Ewig purchased the former Lueptow's furniture building, causing the Shoppes of Port Washington to find a new home.
  • July: Operations at a recently opened roll-your-own cigarette shop in Port came to a screeching hault after President Barack Obama signed a federal transportation bill that includes a provision redefining RYO cigarette stores as manufacturers.

  • October: The last three months of the year are filled with a controversial attempt to refill the bar after Foxys Bar closed the last weekend of September.
  • November: A new beginning for the former Foxy's location got off to a rocky start in gaining necessary city approvals.
  • December: Building code violations added more bumps to the process for the hopeful business owner, but the council ultimately denied the needed liquor license.
