Despite Lower Campaign Success Rate, United Way Remains Optimistic

United Way of Northern Ozaukee is slow to reach its ambitious goal — behind 11 percent from previous years — but hopes end-of-year sales will help.

In what Saukville Village President and United Way board member Barb Dickmann called the "most ambitious campaign" ever, United Way of Northern Ozaukee said this year's overall funds raised is down 11 percent, according to a press release from Executive Director Barbara Bates-Nelson.

The group tried to bolster sales this year with the addition of chocolate bars, designed and created at and sold in businesses in Ozaukee County for $8 each.

Last year, the group's goal was to raise $175,000 — a number it surpassed at a total of $191,000. This year, the group is hoping to come up with $200,000.

Despite the overall campaign being down, the board remains positive — pointing to previous trends of end of the year donations, according to the press release. In the past, many donations have been made late in the year while donors are looking to make year-end charitable tax deductions. The board is hopeful that this year is no different.

United Way gives 85 cents of every dollar back to the community, helping community members who may face difficulties, including the elderly, mentally and physically challenged, neglected, abused and children. Organizations that benefit from the campaign include: Family Sharing of Ozaukee County, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Ozaukee County Jail Literacy Program, Balance, Interfaith Caregivers of Ozaukee County and more.

Ansay, Associated Bank, Brooks Investments, Charter Steel, Chocolate Chisel, Dockside Deli, Drews True Value, Edward Jones, Harris Bank, Kohler Credit Union, Ozaukee County, Port Washington State Bank and Wisconsin Energies.

The candy bars make great stocking stuffers, employee thank you gifts or just to satisfy your sweet tooth, the press release suggests. If you would like information on how to start a workplace campaign, or make a personal donation, contact Bates-Nelson at 262 284-0898.
