In the Business of All Around Fitness

A Port Washington based fitness program has been helping adults and kids find a healthy balance to their lifestyle.

Creating a healthier lifestyle is likely to be full of a number of life lessons, something Pam Huiras said she learned while participating in the Soaring Free program hosted by Inspiring Fitness in Port Washington.

“I learned I can do things I didn’t think I could," she said.

Huiras took the program last October and, after ten sessions, lost about 10 pounds.

"I always leave the club feeling good about myself and the workout … and sweaty," she said.

Soaring Free is a one-on-one program, and provides ten hour-long sessions which incorporate exercise, relaxation, stress management and more.

The program isn’t designed just for adults, either.  Take Reese Zimpelman, for example.  As a child with Asperger’s, a highly functioning autism-like disorder, Zimpelman was able to gain a lot from the Soaring Free program.

Zimpelman’s mother, Christine Ungs, signed her son up for the program hoping to help her, "bundle of energy," find new ways to relax and improve his confidence, and said she got more than she bargained for.

With exercises that kept up with Zimpelman’s energy level, calming breathing techniques for stressful situations and occasional Reiki energy work, the program strived to achieve a level of relaxation and stability.

"After an hour there, he’s pretty tired!" she said. "It’s a good little workout for him."

What Ungs wasn’t expecting was the bond formed between her son and Sandra Large, the founder and instructor of the Soaring Free program.

“[Zimpelman] responded really well to me,” Large said, adding he was able to share feelings with Large that he was uncomfortable talking about at home with his family.

“He leaves there with a real good sense of himself,” Ungs said.

Large stressed that the program is about incorporating health with more than just physical fitness.

"It’s a balance of a lot of things," she said.

She said she integrates emotional and spiritual well-being into the sessions to encourage balance, and personalizes the program activities to suit every individual’s needs.

So far, she said, the reviews have been outstanding.

"I recommend it to other people all the time," Ungs said.  "There’s a nice aspect to the program that builds kids’ confidence.  For any child who’s a little bit uncomfortable with themselves, I think it’s a real plus."
