Summer Volunteer Opportunity for High School and College Students

Have a great time volunteering with some great kids this summer!

Volunteers Needed for the Summer Recreation Program for Children with Developmental Disabilities

Each summer during the month of July, Balance, Inc. provides a summer recreation program for children with developmental disabilities between the ages of 5 and 15.  Each child is paired with volunteer buddy.  Together they spend the day with the group in the community participating in recreation activities such as swimming, visiting museums, zoos, nature parks and reserves, water parks, and much, much more.

The volunteers are primarily high school and college age students who devote 40 to 100 hours during the month to this program.  Many students use this as a way to collect community service hours.  Each summer more than 30 students volunteer to assist with the 24 children who participate in the program.  Volunteers should be at least 15 years old.

For 2013, the program runs weekdays from July 8th through August 2nd mainly in the afternoon.

This program is funded through the Ozaukee County Human Services Department, the Ozaukee County ARC, and donations from individuals and local businesses.  Balance, Inc. is a nonprofit organization serving people with developmental disabilities.

This program is possible only with the help of many volunteers.  Without the commitment and support of volunteers who assist the children during the program, this program would not be possible.  Volunteers experience many benefits as well while supporting the children.

In addition to enjoying the time with some exceptional children helping them participate in a wide variety of recreation activities, volunteers can gain many hours of community service!  Past volunteers have said that volunteering for this program has helped them stand out in their college application process.  While making new friends with the children and other volunteers, they are also making a difference in their community.
