Dry Weather Impacts Farmers Market, But Show Goes On

Organizers hoped the Port Washington Farmers Market would look more like a weekly community festival in the city's downtown, and while it's going good organizers say better weather would have helped.

The Port Washington Farmers Market kicked off this year with hopes for a bigger street festival, music and entertainment.

And while Main Street Executive Director Sara Grover said it has been going well, she also said they unknowingly picked the wrong year to attempt expansion — all thanks to the drought this area has been experiencing.

"It’s going well in light of the growing season," Grover said. "(The growers have) really been impacted. One of our main farmers — the Bublitz’s — have missed one or two Saturdays just because they haven’t had product."

But new participants such as the Shop Port, Think Local group, hot-food stands, music and kids games have helped to make the event a little different, she said.
