Candy, popcorn, ice cream and cookies β€” chances are many kids are asking for snacks like these before begging for carrots, broccoli or bananas. But childhood obesity is a real problem, and healthy living habits do not develop from eating all those snacks. How do you get your kids to enjoy eating healthy foods? Is there a method to ensuring they get all the right stuff from all the right places on the food pyramid? Are there restaurants in the area that are better than others at catering to families looking to go out, and still eat healthy?

The Moms Council says: Make sure every meal is a well rounded and healthy one. Stock the house with healthy snacks for in-between meal munchies.

If you keep junk food out of the house, kids will have a lesser ability to consume it. Plus, they will understand that treats, such as a can of soda, can be reserved for special occasions β€” moderation is a good motto to live by, and teach to your kids.

One more important way to make sure kids eat what they need? Parents should lead by example.
