Liaison Officer to Work Part Time in Port Schools

After about seven years without a liaison officer, the Port Washington-Saukville School District and the Port Washington Police Department are teaming up to bring the program back.

The and the have teamed up to add a school liaison officer starting in the 2012-13 school year.

Officer Tom Schleg will be the liaison officer working in the schools as part of his regular duties on a part-time basis, Port Washington Police Chief Kevin Hingiss said in a press release.

"In an effort to promote and build positive relationships between youth, law enforcement and the criminal justice system, Officer Tom Schleg, a 20-year veteran of the department, will be placed in Port Washington High School and Thos. Jefferson Middle School approximately 8 – 20 hours per week," Hingiss said in the release. "Officer Schleg will assist in promoting the six pillars of character from Character Counts and will be a positive role model. Officer Schleg's presence in the schools will promote respect for people and property, build a positive attitude toward law enforcement, and give students more access to the legal system."

School District principals in February said the liason programs did benefit the district. The schools had to get rid of the liason officer about 7 years ago because of budgetary reasons.

"The liaison program would be an asset to the middle school,"  Principal Arlan Galarowicz said, adding that the presence of the officers allowed the schools to incorporate curriculum that got officers in front of the students.
