Supporting a healthy lifestyle can reduce the recurrence and increase the likelihood of disease-free survival after a diagnosis of cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

We sport our pink gear to show our support and remembrance of these amazing women. This is also a good opportunity to recognize all types of cancers and learn
ways to reduce cancer risks.

Over the last several years, evidence has accumulated to show the importance of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight through regular physical activity and healthy eating in cancer risk reduction. Supporting a healthy lifestyle can also reduce the recurrence and increase the likelihood of disease-free survival after a diagnosis of cancer.

Manystudies have shown that being physically active has a tremendous impact on quality of life of cancer survivors. Now, studies have demonstrated that physical activity after cancer diagnosis is also associated with a lower  risk of the cancer reoccurrence and improved survival among multiple cancer survivor groups, including breast, colon, prostate, and ovarian cancer.

The American Cancer Society and the American College of Sports Medicine encourage survivors to aim to exercise for at least 150 minutes per week, and to include strength training exercises at least 2 days per week. For survivors who have not been previously active, gradually working up to these recommendations is the way to go.
