Attack on Beekeepers Strikes Worry About City's Focus

Urban beekeeping has become a mainstream issue, but the Port Washington Common Council still has other important problems to focus on.

Bees. Bee hives. This is the ? This is the pressing issue of the esteemed Port Washington Common Council?

Is this a joke?

My question is this: does the Common Council have nothing better to debate than the quiet hobby of a taxpayer? I mean come on, these gentlemen must be exhausted.

First the Senior Center debate — where in the world will we ‘house’ the elderly of the community? Nevermind the endless rabble of teenagers hanging out on the streets and . Perhaps the city could use the old as a place for our youth to hang out? How foolish of me … I guess walking from downtown to should be enough entertainment for the future adults of our fair city. I am sure these young adults will find other ways to occupy their time.

Oh, let’s not forget the gall of the constituent who planted his lawn with flowers  and also had the audacity of planting flowers on the parkway in front of his house?! Attention Port Washington residents: Anarchy is upon us! Thank goodness we have the Common Council to take up this highly contested argument: grass or flowers … hmm … what would Mother Nature do??

Now we move on to the bee hive hazard.  Yes — some see this as a hazard. Other generalities have been thrown around: public nuisance, a neighborhood in peril, a threat to our quiet community.

Wow.

Here is a family who has . Apparently educating one’s self and gaining pre-approval from City Administrator Mark Grams isn’t enough for the Council. And then the Patch publishes — and what is really unbelievable is they don’t even deny the "accusations." They admit that they are participating in beekeeping! Holy criminal behavior, Batman!

I agree that we need rules and regulations to live as a free society but when have we crossed a line? When do we finally tell our elected officials: Enough is enough!  Are there no other pressing issues in our community? Did the downtown suddenly improve and business is booming? Have all of the vacant storefronts been filled? Has the old ? Has the city finally built a safe walkway to the north beach? Has been freed from its high drug activity?

My plea to the Common Council is this: Don’t forget who elected you into your position.
