Registration now open for RAINBOWS Program

Program to begin October 22

The Board of Directors at Ozaukee Family Services (OFS) is pleased to announce that registration for its annual RAINBOWS program is now open.

RAINBOWS is a free program for children (K – 12th grade) who are dealing with major family changes such as divorce or death of a parent.  RAINBOWS groups will meet twice a month, on Tuesday evenings, from 6:30 – 7:30 at the Family Enrichment Center in Grafton.  The first session will be on October 22. This program fills up quickly, so register early by calling Ozaukee Family Services at 262.376.7774.

RAINBOWS guides kids through life’s storms with a series of peer support group sessions. The 13-session program offers healing and support to children who are facing issues that sometimes lead to anger, grief, confusion, feelings of responsibility, or depression.

Participants are not only given an outlet to talk about their feelings but also an opportunity to understand them, gain self-esteem, and develop a healthy acceptance of the changes that have taken place.  According to Linda Stolz, the RAINBOWS Coordinator at OFS, “Children may not open up to a parent about their concerns, but then they hear other kids talk about some of the same things and they don’t feel so alone.”

At each session, small groups of children meet to share an activity, write in their journals and discuss common concerns. Children are typically grouped by age and the type of change they have experienced, either divorce or the death of a parent. The sessions are fun, and the topics are meaningful. A concurrent parent group is offered for any interested parents.

There is no fee to participate in the RAINBOWS program. However, space is limited in each group, so anyone interested is encouraged to register ASAP.  To get more information, register, or learn about becoming a volunteer facilitator, contact OFS at 262.376.7774.
