What is the Difference?
The main differences between organic and inorganic foods are in the way the foods are grown, handled, and processed.
Conventionally grown produce typically uses chemical fertilizers, synthetic insecticides and herbicides. These chemicals are used to stimulate plant growth, decrease pests and lower the risk of disease in the produce. They also aid in managing weeds that can be bothersome for farming.
Conventionally farmed animals are typically given antibiotics, growth hormones and other medications to prevent diseases and increase animal growth.
Organic produce only uses natural fertilizer and pesticides from natural sources.
Organic Farm animals are given organic feed and allowed more access outdoors than animals on conventional farms.
There are benefits to eating organic however; these benefits will come at a price because organic farming is a more expensive practice and therefor the produce is going to be more expensive. Organic foods often taste “fresher” then conventionally grown produce. Organic fruits and vegetables don’t contain preservatives that will help keep them fresh longer. The produce will taste better but only for a short time. Without the preservatives the foods will not last as long in the refrigerator than the conventionally grown items.
Organic farming is also safer for our environment for a number of reasons including; it uses less energy, conserves water, and reduces pollution and soil erosion.
Why does the produce look different?
Conventionally grown produce tends to look better in the stores. The “perfect” look of shape size and color is helped out by the pesticides used to preserve the products. Organic fruits and vegetables tend to have a less desirable shape and color because they do not contain certain pesticides. Despite the look of the foods, the taste should not differ much.
Is one healthier?
Although the farming practices of conventional farms and organic farms differ, there is no scientific evidence that one is “healthier” than the other. Studies have shown the nutritional value of the foods is very similar and there is no significant difference in any nutritional levels including vitamins and minerals.
