Area 7-Year-Old Earns 'Little Hero' Honors

Ozaukee County boy puts knowledge learned at YMCA day camp to use, preventing a forest fire in northern Michigan and earning the Davidson Yell and Tell Foundation's "Little Hero" Award.

It's likely you've heard tales of young heroes across the nation.

For example, there's the two young boys who saved a bus full of students from a faulty fire extinguisher or a 4-year-old boy who called 911 when his mother collapsed on the floor — a move that earned him an international hero award.

Those are the kinds of stories that can cause a good-feeling "wow" moment, and Ozaukee County residents can be proud to add one new tale of a hero to its own list.

Lincoln Dunstone, 7, of Cedarburg received the Davidson Yell and Tell Foundation's "Little Hero" Award after he used what he learned from the program at the Day Camp to prevent a forest fire in northern Michigan, according to a press release from the YMCA.

"While four-wheeling with his father on their private land in Powers, Michigan, Lincoln Dunstone’s four wheeler caught fire," the release said. "Lincoln quickly jumped off, unharmed, and the four-wheeler rolled down a hill and exploded into flames. Lincoln used the skills he learned from the Yell and Tell Program to alert his father and they notified authorities, preventing a forest fire."

The Yell and Tell program is aimed at young children who see something dangerous but then don't know how to react.

The program was started by Jean Davidson, who recently lost her 4-year-old grandson, Ryder, in an accident "that could have been prevented if the child standing nearby would have known how to react," the program's website said.

Jean is Walter Davidson's granddaughter; Walter is one of the founders of Harley-Davidson and also the first president of the company.

There program features six different categories (pools, rivers/lakes, fire, poison, guns and child enticement) teaching kids how to react in emergencies in those settings.

"Many times this child will run away or be quiet because he/she doesn’t want to get into trouble or be called a tattletale," the YMCA press release said. "Sometimes a child is so afraid, he/she is too scared to do anything. The Yell and Tell program teaches children how to take action and be a hero."
