Arrests Made for Thefts from Vehicles, Police Say

A Port Washington resident called police about the two suspicious individuals, and officers responded and also found some of the stolen items while making the arrest.

Police arrested two Port Washington men in connection with a string of thefts from vehicles throughout the summer.

A resident on Parkview Lane called police on Saturday to report two suspicious individuals going through vehicles on her street, offering police descriptions of the people as well as an idea of where the two were headed, according to a press release from the department.

Officers responded to the area and arrested a 19-year-old man and 20-year-old man, both of Port Washington, the press release said. In further investigation, police found some items believed to be stolen in previous incidents.

"I believe our officers did an excellent job of intercepting, arresting, and subsequently investigating the two suspects," Police Chief Kevin Hingiss said. "This would not have been possible however, without the call and assistance of our reporting witness. Crimes like this can be difficult to solve without the public's help, and reporting witnesses such as this are invaluable to us."

While police have been able to return some items to the victims, others remain at the department. The department asks anyone who was the victim of a theft to contact police at 262-284-2611 to see whether their belongings were recovered.

Despite arrests being made, the department warns that the threat of thefts remains.

"Although it is our hope that these arrests will see an end to these vehicle thefts, we ask the public to remain vigilant," Hingiss said. "We would also like to remind our citizens to remember to lock their doors and remove valuable items from their vehicles. Our community is a safe community, but these crimes are crimes of opportunity, and that opportunity dries up quickly with locked doors and nothing to steal."
