Backpack Gives Away Man with Warrant

Due to recent thefts in the area, police stopped the man walking with a backpack at night only to find there was already a warrant for his arrest.

What started as a late night stroll with a backpack ended in a foot chase before the arrest of this 29-year-old Port Washington man.

Saukville police noticed the man walking on East Green Bay Avenue near South Mill Street with a backpack at 1:11 a.m. Monday, according to police reports. Considering recent thefts in the area and the time of night, police considered this suspicious and stopped to talk to him.

The man said he was walking from a friend's house and wasn't doing anything wrong; he man allowed police to check his backpack, but was reluctant to get close to the officer and seemed agitated and nervous, the report said. The man gave police his name and when it was run through dispatch, it was found that the man had an active warrant through the Saukville Police Department.

When the man realized the police knew about the warrant, he took off running down an alley on Clay Street, the report said. Police were able to catch the man and get him to the ground.  Once on the ground, the man continued to try to flee, but eventually gave up and was taken into custody for the warrant.

The department has requested charges against the man for resisting/obstructing an officer from the Ozaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
