Considering him not to be a flight risk, Judge Paul Malloy set bail for the Port Washington school bus driver accused of inappropriately touching students at $2,500 during the intial court appearance Wednesday.

In setting the amount, Malloy also noted that Randy R. Mayer, 57, has no criminal record and has been willing to cooperate throughout the entire investigation.

Other conditions of bail include that Mayer not leave the state of Wisconsin, surrender his passport and have no contact with the boys mentioned in the complaint nor with any children under the age of 16.

Mayer posted bail and was released from the courthouse Wednesday afternoon, according to Cynthia Minter, who works in records at the Ozaukee County Courthouse.

Mayer is being charged with three felony counts of first-degree sexual assault and faces up to 180 years of prison if convicted on all three. The charges are associated with incidents involving two boys, 9 and 10 years old, which took place between Oct. 1-13, 2011. The Port Washington Police Department interviewed 37 students about the allegations, said Police Chief Richard Thomas.

Mayer, 225 S. Madison Ave., Port Washington, is a lifelong resident of the city at this very address, according to his attorney, Gerald Boyle. Throughout the investigation, Boyle advised Mayer not to have contact with any child under 16 — a standard he's already been adhering to.

"I don't think there is going to be any problem with him having contact with children under 16," Boyle said.

Mayer is set to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 3 for a status hearing.
