Family Blames Inmate's Suicide on County Jail

The husband of a 42-year-old woman who killed herself while being held at Ozaukee County Jail said he warned officers she had recently attempted suicide.

Family of a 42-year-old woman who killed herself while being held at Ozaukee County Jail blame officers in the death.

Sonia Mojica's family has filed wrongful death claims against the county jail, according to an Ozaukee Press article; the claims are precursors to a lawsuit. Mojica's husband said he told officers that his wife had attempted suicide just a couple weeks earlier on the night of her arrest, but that information was never relayed to county jail staff to aid in proper care of a suicidal inmate.

Officials found Mojica hanging in her single occupancy cell; Deputies and Port Washington Rescue and Paramedics were able to use life saving techniques to resuscitate the inmate, however Mojica died in the hospital six days later.

Mojica was one of three suicides that occurred at Ozaukee County Jail over the summer.
