Inmate Under Medical Observation Before Passing Away

Officials are still trying to determine the cause of death for a 53-year-old Grafton man who died in Ozaukee County jail over the weekend.

An autopsy for the 53-year-old Grafton man who passed away in Ozaukee County Jail over the weekend is inconclusive, though officials believe it was "medical-related."

Emanuel M. Washington, 53, was being held in a medical observation cell when he was found unconscious at 2:48 a.m. Sunday, according to Lt. Jeffrey Sauer. Third-shift officers found him and attempted CPR, but Washington died about 45 minutes later.

Washington was withdrawing from a drug, which was why he was under medical observation, Sauer said. The medical observation cells are located near the booking area, where inmates can be monitored by two officers at all times.

Officials are still working to determine the exact cause of death, he said.

Washington is the third inmate to die since June, the earlier deaths both ruled suicides.
