The Port Washington Police Department is asking residents to make a point to lock their car doors after a rash of thefts from unlocked vehicles.

Port Washington Police Chief Kevin Hingiss said the department has responded to about a half-dozen calls, though two arrests have been made in connection with some of the thefts.

"What we'd like to do is get people to lock their car doors, or if you don't locl your doors don't leave valuables in your car," he said. In some of the thefts, the suspect entered an unlocked garage before breaking into the unlocked vehicle.

This has been an issue in summer's past: more than 30 thefts from unlocked vehicles were reported between May and August 2011.
