Car, Motorcycle Purchases Don't 'Check' Out, Police Say

An Ozaukee County man is charged after checks used to buy a car and a motorcycle — totaling more than $16,000 — were returned for insufficient funds

A 24-year-old Milwaukee man is facing charges after he police say he bought a car and a motorcycle from two different Ozaukee County dealers and paid for them with bad checks.

Darin R. Bolander Jr. was charged in Ozaukee County Circuit Court last week Monday with two counts of issuing a worthless check and two counts of theft through false representation. If convicted, he faces up to 19 years in prison and $40,000 in fines.

On Aug. 31, Bolander went to Ernie Von Schledorn and purchased a 2005 Chevrolet Impala for $9,500, which he paid for with a check. The check was later returned to the dealership, which tried to make contact with Bolander but was unsuccessful.

Saukville police officers were made aware of the bad check on Sept. 11 and on Sept. 18, the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Department was called to Cedar Creek Motorsports after employees there said Bolander came in on Aug. 28, put $500 down on a motorcycle, then came back Sept. 7 and said he couldn’t get financing so he paid the rest of the amount with a $7,431 check. Both checks were later returned due to insufficient funds.

One of the Cedar Creek employees told investigators he went to Bolander's house and found him in the driveway sitting on a Harley Davidson motorcycle. He told Bolander he was from Cedar Creek and was there to get the motorcycle the dealership sold him, but Bolander said that motorcycle was at a Harley dealership because he used it to buy a new bike from there.

The employee went to the Harley dealer and got the motorcycle back, according to the complaint. He also got a jacket back from Bolander, which was purchased at the same time as the motorcycle.

Bolander is out of custody, but a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
