Motorists, Bicyclists Both Responsible for Road Safety

Ozaukee County Sheriff Maury Straub reminds residents to play it safe on the roads with the arrival of the warm season.

With the season of two wheels now in full swing, Ozaukee County Sheriff Maury Straub would like to remind both motorists and bicyclists the importance of saftey on the roads.

"With the arrival of summer and warmer weather, bicycle ridership increases dramatically," Straub said in a press release from his department. "Safety is achieved only when a mutual respect for other people using the roadways exist."Β

State law requires motorists passing a bicycle to do so providing a safe distance between the vehicle and the bicycle of no less than three feet, the press release said.

On the flip side, traffic laws also apply to bicyclists, the press release said. "Even when riding two abreast ... ride as close as possible to the edge of the unobstructed roadway."

"It is my hope that with this reminder and a mutual respect for the laws, and others sharing the roads, that we will have a safe and enjoyable season," Straub said in the release.
