Pedestrian Struck by Car in Port Washington Suffers Knee Injury

Driver in Friday incident cited for failure to yield to pedestrian in crosswalk.

A vehicle struck a pedestrian at the corner of East Washington and North Franklin streets on Friday after pulling out from a stop sign.

Port Washington Fire Chief Mark Mitchell said the victim, who is a minor, was treated at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton for a knee injury.

The driver of the vehicle, a 24-year-old Belgium woman, said she had stopped at the intersection, checked that traffic was clear "numerous times," and began pulling out onto Franklin Street, according to the police report.

An off-duty EMT from Random Lake happened upon the scene and tended to the victim. She stated that the vehicle had only been moving about 5 mph.

A second witness to the scene said it appeared the pedestrian, who was walking with an unidentified woman, was already crossing Franklin Street with his back to the vehicle when he was struck.
