Port Police Report: Officers Cracking Down on Hwy. 33 Construction Problems

A roundup of the latest activity from the police blotter also includes a break-in misunderstanding, a couple keyed vehicles and outdoor urination.

It's obvious that some drivers are having a hard time adapting to the portion of Highway 33 that is currently closed while under construction.

Police received numerous complainst at 5:17 p.m. Saturday about vehicles attempting to pass through the construction zone even though the area is clearly marked "road closed to through traffic."

The closed section is between Summit and Portview drives, and . Traffic is supposed to reroute onto South Spring Street (also Highway 32) to County Highway LL, back to Hwy. 33 during that time.

Officers are monitoring the area and will issue warnings and citations to violators.

  • Lost key: It was no April Fool's at 4:29 p.m. April 1 when police responded to a call of a juvenile crawling into an apartment through a window in the 300 block of Norport Drive. But, turns out, it was no criminal either. After speaking with the suspect, police learned the juvenile lived in the home but had lost his key.
  • Speaking of keys: Two Port women reported their vehicles being damaged  by keys in early April. At 8:24 a.m. April 2, a 54-year-old Port woman reported her vehicle had been keyed overnight while parked in the 1000 block of South Spring Street. That woman could not think of any suspects. At 9:20 p.m. April 2, a 36-year-old Port woman reported the same thing in the 1000 block of Portview Drive. She, however, blamed her ex — but he denied involvement. There are no other suspects. 
  • Where's the John? Police repsonded to a call about a man having peed outside at 7:29 a.m. April 3. The 21-year-old Portage man admitted to urinating on a tree in the 500 block of Summit Drive. He was cited for disorderly conduct.
  • Duck, duck, goose! Numerous calls came into the police department at 7:46 p.m. Saturday about a power transformer in the area of Oakland and Keeney avenues having blown. It was found that a bird, initially believed to be a duck, had flew into the power lines causing the outage. We Energies officials later confirmed a .
