UPDATE: Hit-and-Run Victim in Critical Condition

A 55-year-old man remains in custody after admitting to relative, police he had hit the 82-year-old Port Washington woman; driver may have been intoxicated.

A 55-year-old Port Washington man has admitted to being behind the wheel of the Toyota Tundra truck .

Kopacz sustained head, leg and arm injuries and remains in critical condition at Froedtert Memorial Hospital in Wauwatosa as of 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to hospital officials.

The driver was arrested for causing injury by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle — a felony offense — and other misdemeanor and civil traffic violations, according to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office. His name has not yet been released.

Kopacz was struck around 7 a.m. while walking on County Highway KK (Moore Road) near North Spring Street and the railroad tracks in the Town of Port Washington, the Sheriff's Office said.

The vehicle that hit her was traveling north on Moore road and struck Kopacz as she walked south along the east shoulder. Kopacz was wearing a red flashing bicycle reflector on the front of her coat.

At 12:25 p.m. the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a relative of the driver after he had told the relative what happened. The relative urged the individual to contact the Sheriff’s Office.

At 1 p.m., the driver contacted the Sheriff’s Office and admitted the crime. He was taken into custody at 1:50 p.m. at his place of employment in Sheboygan. The truck was impounded.
