Police: Port Woman Steals Neighbor's Painkillers

Suspect tells police she took the drugs because she has a drug problem and is unemployed.

A 40-year-old Port Washington woman is facing charges after police say she stole painkillers from her neighbor’s apartment.

Vanessa F. Schwengel was charged in Ozaukee County Circuit Court on Thursday with one count of theft and one count of possession of a controlled substance. If convicted, she faces up to 10 months in prison and $10,500 in fines.

A woman living in the 100 block of North Montgomery Street contacted Port Washington police officers after she noticed six of her Hydrocodone pills had gone missing from her apartment. She told police Schwengel was her neighbor and suspected her in the theft because she had been in the apartment often and would make excuses to enter the kitchen where the pills were kept.

Schwengel admitted taking the pills to police, saying she has a drug problem and is unemployed.
