60th District Candidate Curtis Wants More Representation for Tax Payers on MATC Board

Jake Curtis is one of nine candidates running for the 60th Assembly District spot.

  • Editor's Note: This is one article in a series of profiles on the candidates running for the 60th Assembly District.

In running for the 60th Assembly District spot, Republican Jake Curtis said he's putting his focus where a lot of Ozaukee County tax payers' money goes: Milwaukee Area Technical College in Ozaukee Campus.

"Many Ozaukee County residents end up paying a higher proportion of their property tax dollars to MATC than to Ozaukee County," he said."This is largely the result of outrageous employee compensation packages.

"Unfortunately, Ozaukee County residents are not able to hold board members accountable because of the appointment process in place for service on the board.  The change needed is simple – give Ozaukee residents the chance to vote for individuals who represent their views regarding taxing and spending for purposes of technical college training," he said.

Curtis is one of nine candidates vying for the 60th District position, and one of seven Republicans. The primary election for the spot is Tuesday; the top Republican and top Democrat candidate will move on to a general election on May 3. The 60th Assembly District seat has been empty to become transportation secretary for Gov. Scott Walker.

Curtis said the "economic viability" of Wisconsin rests greatly on the success of the legislature being proposed under Gov. Scott Walker.

"This legislature must ensure that taxes and fees are not raised, segregated funds are maintained, and one-time revenue sources are not relied upon," he said. "This will require tough decisions."

The affect those tough decisions have had on public employees is unfortunate, he said, but the "reality is that public employees need to begin contributing to their health care costs and pensions."
