UPDATE: Goose to Blame for Power Outage Affecting 1,200 Port Customers

About 12 customers remained without power late Saturday night as We Energies worked to repair a down wire, which got that way because of a collision with a large bird.

Power has been restored to roughly 1,200 customers in Port Washington, but about 12 customers remain without power late Saturday as We Energies crew members work to repair a down wire, according to We Energies spokesperson Brian Manthey.

Early speculation was that a duck or other animal may have been to blame for the outage, but Manthey was eventually able to confirm the actual culprit: a goose.

"Apparently the goose may have survived, it may have actually just hit the wire," he said. "These geese are so big that … they knock it down on their own."

Geese can weigh about 30 or 40 pounds, Manthey said. Smaller birds can cause outages β€” by coming into contact with two wires or a wire and equipment at the same time can cause an outage β€” but they usually don't survive.

The outages started at 7:44 p.m. Saturday, according to the outage map on it's website. Manthey said that the outages were caused because of a down wire at the intersection of West Oakland and South Keeney avenues. The customers who remained without power late Saturday are the ones closest to the intersection, and power is expected to be back up by 11 p.m. Saturday.
