Bird Sanctuary Near Completion as Part of Coal Dock Project

Though subleases with We Energies were approved more than a year ago, city officials say they are still in the planning process of the north dock project and construction will likely not start until fall.

It's been more than a year since the with We Energies for public use of the north and south coal docks, with plans for the eventual development of the area into a public recreation and nature site.

On Aug. 6, the south dock area — which was turned into some walking trails as part of a bird sanctuary — will finally open up to the public, City Administrator Mark Grams said. Visitors will be able to access the sanctuary from South Beach.

But the north coal dock still sits looking the same as before.

, and city officials focused their efforts on finding grants — rather than starting construction. Now, officials are still working with engineers on some plan revisions, City Engineer Rob Vanden Noven said.

Late summer 2012 is when officials had initially hoped the public might have access to the entire area, according to an article to the Ozaukee Press.

Now, officials anticipate the project will go out for bids in August, with construction starting in October — and a lot of winter work being done to the area, Vanden Noven said.

On Tuesday, the Coal Dock committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall to discuss final plans for the project. Officials now hope to see the coal docks open  on June 1, 2013.
