Briggs Land Rezoned as Residential

Following debate over what to do with the 6.6-acre property in the Foster Commons area, the Saukville Village Board approved the rezoning of Peter Briggs' large property.

In a brief meeting, the Saukville Village Board rezoned a parcel of land at the intersection of Highway 33 and Riverside Drive to multi-family residential, taking into consideration its relationship to the rest of the Foster Commons area.

The nearly seven-acre property owned by Peter Briggs is zoned as institutional, allowing the construction of schools and churches.  However, Community Development Director Brian Biernat, reporting on Briggs’ behalf, said the owner felt that rezoning from institutional to multi-family residential “would help him effectively market the property.”

Village President Barb Dickmann reflected on previous Plan Commission meetings where the rezoning of the parcel was carefully considered.  “It was a really nice presentation,” she said of the information on the large property.

With the information the Village Board obtained from the meeting, as well as from consulting with Biernat and the Zoning Committee, the petition to rezone the 6.6-acre plot to multi-family residential was approved.

The Foster Commons area, according to Biernat, is intended to be a mixed-use district including hospitality and entertainment like the Marcus Cinema.  However, residential properties can be included to help support those businesses.

In the case of the Briggs property, Biernat said it “lends itself best to residential development.”
