Coal Dock Park Opening Delayed

Weather will postpone the opening and cancel a grand opening event planned for the new Coal Dock Park.

An 8-hour event planned to celebrate the opening of the new Coal Dock Park is canceled after weather caused delays in construction.

City Engineer Rob Vanden Noven said rainy, cold weather has postponed the grand opening date originally planned for June 22.

It's likely a soft opening event and/or a dedication event will be planned when the park is ready, he said, and a committee that had been planning the event will meet to discuss the issue on Wednesday.

The park is located on the north coal dock; a bird sanctuary and walking trails accessible from South Beach opened on the south coal dock last year.

 Here's a rundown of the park's proposed features:
  • Expanded marina space;
  • Promenade;
  • Fishing access;
  • Harbor walk;
  • Pedestrian bridge connecting the north and south coal docks;
  • Wisconsin Street "gateway" to the park;
  • and naturalization of Sauk Creek.
A pavilion honoring drowning victims Tyler Buczek and Peter Dougherty has also been proposed on the space, and a WWII Veteran Memorial was dedicated last fall.
