Dog Park Owners Hope to Launch Early Summer

Approval of conditional use permit during Tuesday night's Common Council meeting means a private dog park will soon be coming to Port Washington.

Lucky Dog Park in Port Washington is slated to open this summer after approval of a conditional use permit during Tuesday night's Common Council meeting.

Ellen Paulus plans to launch the dog park with her husband, Bob, on their business' property at Paulus Printing, 1270 Mineral Springs Dr. The property is in an industrial zone, and a conditional use permit was required to allow the park within that zone.

"We're ... getting moving on all of the logistics of creating the park," Ellen Paulus told Patch on Wednesday. The couple will need to secure insurance and finalize the LLC for its "Lucky Dog Park" business, and so forth.

The space where the Pauluses plan to launch the park is just over an acre in size. Fencing will be added around the yard, and dog owner's interested in coming with their pets would have to provide certain information to become a member, such as proof of vaccinations, as well as pay a fee.

Ellen Paulus told Patch in February that the fee structure isn't set in stone, but they are basing it on other area private parks; monthly, annual and daily passes will likely be options.

"I want to try to make there be opportunities for all dog owners and their families to come have fun in a safe place, and not have it that people are some place with their dogs, where their dog’s not appreciated or wanted," she said.

The park will be open from dawn to dusk, with either Bob or Ellen present during those hours to begin with. Ellen said they will guage the interest, and are debating adding an indoor park for winter exercise — an idea she's heard was well-received among community members, Ellen Paulus said.

The couple hopes it will be able to open its doors in early summer, with a possible open house in late May. Anyone interested in the park can also contact Bob or Ellen Paulus at pauprint@sbcglobal.net, but a lot of the details for joining will not be available until they get closer to opening.
