Emerald Ash Borer Discovered in Another Ozaukee County Community

State officials have discovered the tree-killing beetle in the Village of Fredonia — the fourth Ozaukee County community since the insect was first found in Wisconsin.

The Emerald Ash Borer has been discovered in a fourth Ozaukee County community, showing that the infestation is growing in the area, the Ozaukee Press reports.

Officials with the state Department of Natural Resources discovered the tree-killing insect's presence in several ash trees in the Village of Fredonia, the Press writes.

Emerald Ash Borer was first discovered in Port Washington last summer. Though in 2005, the city stopped planting ash trees along city streets, as a preventative step.

In January, the city was awarded a $25,000 forestry grant from the DNF to help replace trees lost to the beetle infestation.

Emerald Ash Borer, native to China, was first found in the U.S. in Michigan in 2002, and in Wisconsin in 2008, according to the DNR. The invasive beetle bores under the bark of ash trees, disrupting the trees' ability to sustain themselves.
